My fourth NetHack ascension happened on . I was playing as a neutral female human tourist. It was my first genocideless ascension and my second highest score. I was playing NetHack 3.6.6 from the Debian package. It was on the same computer as ascension #3.
You made the top ten list! No Points Name Hp [max] 1 4606032 david-Tou-Hum-Fem-Neu ascended to demigoddess-hood. 127 [127] 2 2329658 david-Bar-Hum-Mal-Cha ascended to demigod-hood. 221 [286]
This ascension was unlike the prior three in that I have a record of the game almost from the beginning—not just the ascension run. I had recently taught a friend to play NetHack, and I was sharing my progress with them in text updates and screenshots, which I saved after I had won. The whole game took almost a month—the first chat message I saved, which I think was from Dlvl 1, is timestamped . (Friday the 13th!) My friend was still a beginner, which is why many of the screenshots have spoilers redacted.
March 13
The run got off to a strong start on Dlvl 2 where there was an armor shop. With my starting tourist money I was able to buy and test a lot of armor. I lost the earliest screenshots and chat messages, but as I recall I was able to get my AC down to −1. One of the pieces of armor was an opera cloak which I guess to be, and was, a cloak of magic resistance. I would take that cloak to the end of the game.
March 14
From there I must have gotten up to experience level 9. (And a very respectable AC −8.) The next morning, I posted:My tourist is still hanging in there, got a bit of run going last night
I had not been able to pray the previous day, probably because it had been Friday the 13th. I don't remember the details, but in chat I reported having had to retreat from a major battle. I had to abandon my pet dog for so long that it went feral, but I tamed it again.
Later that day I posted a screenshot of a bones level in the Gnomish Mines. This was actually the second time I had seen this bones level (been killed there twice before). This time I killed the soldier with the wand of sleep who had ended an earlier run.
I had a close call in Minetown. I couldn't find the passage into the town. I had picked up an ebony wand from my previous player's inventory on the bones level, and if I remembered correctly, it was a wand of digging. I was aware of the danger of accidentally hitting a shop with the digging ray, but still, I judged the position incorrectly, and clipped the corner of a shop. The shopkeeper said "How dare you dig into my shop?" and started coming after me. Oops! I thought about running away, but as I still had plenty of money, I tried something I wasn't sure would work. I got close and (p)aid the shopkeeper. It didn't work the first time, but after the second time the shopkeeper was appeased and teleported away and all was well. The mistake had cost me 2000 zorkmids. In retrospect, I should have just used one of my starting scrolls of magic mapping.
At this point I told my friend that this was still the early game. I estimated it at about 15% of a winning run. (In terms of turn count, I was pretty much bang on: 10479/69564 = 15.06%.)
March 15
On this morning I reported I was coming up from the bottom of the mines. I had gotten the luckstone from the bottom—and I don't remember exactly, but I might have found another, randomly generated luckstone on the way. I had had an encounter with a rust monster that cost me my helmet.
A few hours later, I called it a day after having gotten back up to Dlvl 4. I had settled on a short sword being my primary weapon, with darts (probably also leveled to expert) for a ranged weapon.
March 17
I paused to take a selfie in the graveyard after descending farther in the Dungeons of Doom. I am not sure, but I might have leveled up once or twice from eating wraith corpses. The character's stats are starting to look pretty good.
I must have picked up a saber and started using it—probably a silver saber from a watch captain. One of the things that helped me in this run was knowing the identify spell. I had probably learned it by this point.
March 19
At I posted:This run might have legs.
I'm currently on the verge of entering what I would call the midgame, about 32k turns in
My definition of "midgame" was entering the quest. At this point I had reached about 46% of what would be the ultimate turn count.
I have a new pet. It's too cool for you to know what it is yet.
Let's just say it's on the Chinese zodiac
I had tamed and saddled an orange dragon which I named Sleepy. At some point I picked up gauntlets of power.
I had acquired a lot of gold. I tried donating it for protection to the priest of my alignment in the temple at the upper right of the map, but it must not have been enough. I was probably over-leveled to be able to buy protection. I've never understood that mechanic well. I wrote regarding the gold: "Not to worry, I got rid of most of it so it won't corrode my soul".
March 20
On this day I posted that my tourist was a decent spellcaster. I had the identify spell which I used frequently. But I also had a lot of heavy armor which was important for survival. I had to remove my helmet, gauntlets, and shield every time I wanted to cast identify.
March 21
I got through the quest and easily defeated the Master of Thieves.
I think I must have gotten a wish and used it to get a gray dragon scale mail. I was also blessing a lot of water and using magic markers to get blessed scrolls of enchant armor to level up my armor. I had maxed every stat except for Int. As you can see, I had ESP, probably from an amulet.
March 24
I had a close call in Juiblex's swamp. I was riding on my orange dragon Sleepy, flying over the water, when it decided to eat a mimic corpse and turned into a tripe ration. I was thrown out of the saddle, but luckily I had had the foresight to put on some water walking boots. On an earlier level, Sleepy had changed from an orange dragon to a blue dragon as a result of eating a chameleon (I think) corpse).
I posted:
I'm a few levels into Gehennom now, which is solidly midgame. I'd say it's more than 50% complete now. This is a winnable run if I don't make any big mistakes.
I don't have a precise turn count for when I made my "more than 50%" estimate, but it is somewhere between the above and below screenshots, which are 40888/69564 = 58.78% and 53923/69564 = 77.52%.
March 25
In the middle of Gehennom I posted a status update. In this screenshot I'm riding Sleepy the blue dragon. The purple @ is not the Wizard of Yendor, possibly it's an Elvenking. I had found a helm of brilliance and enchanted it heavily, which explains my above-cap Int as Wis stats. The Platinum Yendorian Express Card is what's giving me ESP to see through walls.

Wizard of Yendor sightedIt'll still be a little while before our actual confrontation.
I had seen the wizard in his tower but still needed to descend to be able to come up again to face him.
March 30
On this day I killed the wizard and acquired the Book of the Dead. I posted a screenshot but redacted the entire part that shows the wizard's tower.
I wrote:
This is the endgame now, probably about 80% through. Some big challenges still remain, though.
By turn count, I was actually at 64067/69564 = 92.10%. But endgame turns are longer than early-game turns.
April 1
On this day I did the bell, book, and candle ritual on Dlvl 50 to enter Moloch's Sanctum.
April 3
I fought through Moloch's Sanctum and entered the sanctuary. I used the Bell of Opening to find where the door was. It was at that I posted:
Amulet of Yendor acquired.
I predicted that there were several hours of game left, and some difficult and unpredictable challenges.
At some point I lost my pet dragon Sleepy. I think it died several times (it was hard to stop it from attacking strong monsters) and I kept bringing it back to life with a wand of undead turning. I think Sleepy's eventual end was disintegration by a black dragon (which destroyed the saddle too).
I got a new pet dragon, a green one, and named it Skittles. I almost lost it in the sanctum. A high priestess of Moloch zapped a wand of death which missed me and hit Skittles. Luckily there was a corpse, so I zapped a wand of undead turning. But the revived Skittles was only peaceful, not tame. I tried taming it by throwing a tripe ration, but it only made it turn hostile 😓. So I decided to get out a magic marker and write a scroll of taming to make it tame again. It just didn't feel right leaving my pet behind in the sanctum with all the nasty monsters.
As I started to make my way back up, I zapped a wand of enlightenment:
Here I expressed a desire to take the rest of the game slowly, to avoid making a mistake.
April 4
A sad post:
RIP Skittles
Another unfortunate disintegration mishap, if you can believe it
This was the armor shop on Dlvl 2 that had been so important in the early game:
I made it (on foot) back up to Dlvl 1 with the amulet. Look at that AC of −39.
April 5
I waited until the next day to actually climb the stairs.
Well done, mortal! But now thou must face the final Test... Prove thyself worthy or perish! A voice booms out... "So thou thought thou couldst kill me, fool."
For some reason I had a difficult time finding the portal on the plane of earth. I had dug out corridors with wands of digging all over the place. I had hoarded a lot of wands of digging in one of my bags of holding. Here I'm checking my inventory before stepping into the portal:
The plane of air was difficult as always, but I survived. I got down to 90/290 HP at one point and used an emergency potion of full healing. 90 HP may seem like a lot, but it's low enough to get killed by an air elemental in 1 or 2 turns.
You activated a magic portal! You feel dizzy for a moment, but the sensation passes. What a strange feeling! You notice that there is no gravity here.
I was again having a hard time finding the portal. I eventually used a cursed scroll of gold detection to find it.
I posted:
Whew! That's past the second hardest part of the final stretch.
Going to take a break again for now.
April 6
The plane of water wasn't dangerous, but I had a hard time finding the portal.
You activated a magic portal! You feel dizzy for a moment, but the sensation passes. You find yourself suspended in an air bubble surrounded by water.
I had a ring of conflict, but I had so far avoided wearing it. I had a vague idea that I wanted to try to win a run without conflict. (Remember that for later.)
You activated a magic portal! You feel dizzy for a moment, but the sensation passes. You arrive on the Astral Plane! Here the High Temple of The Lady is located. You sense alarm, hostility, and excitement in the air! A voice whispers: "Thou hast been worthy of me!" An angel appears near you.
When I entered the Astral Plane, I got a tame guardian angel.
A voice whispers: "Thou hast been worthy of me!" An angel appears near you.
I tried naming the angel Abdiel, after the one in Paradise Lost, but it didn't work. I'd never seen this message before.
The Angel of The Lady will not accept the name Abdiel.
April 7
I started out heading to the right. Within just a few turns things started to turn bad. The area was getting congested and I was getting surrounded by summoned monsters. Among them were a couple of disenchanters that had me worried.
I killed Famine and managed to get through a temporarily clear doorway and close and lock the door behind me.
I had dropped a scroll of scare monster before going through the door. Angels and other powerful monsters were taking several turns to kill in melee combat, giving them time to summon things and restrict my movement. The spells and wands I had mostly didn't work against them.
Trying to fight was just getting me surrounded by powerful monsters. Liches were causing me a lot of grief on this run.
I was trying a strategy of levitating and zapping a wand of digging downward through chokepoints, to create pits and slow down things that were chasing me.
I fought my way into the sanctuary on the right.
Unfortunately, it was the lawful altar. One down, two to go. Here I hung it up for the day.
April 8
I fought my way back out to the main passage. I had managed to block the right side doorway with a boulder and seal Famine behind it. Here I had the choise of the middle or left ways. I don't remember exactly what happened, but something happened that made me decide against going up the middle. I chose the left path. Here I started getting harassed by Death, whom I regard as the most dangerous rider. The density of monsters was making it hard to get away from Death and he was draining my max HP. Here I've already dropped from 299 to 237 HP.
I managed to shake Death temporarily and make my way to the first door on the left. Here I had my first near-death experience. I got trapped in the doorway and got hit to take me down to just 5 HP. I don't remember if it was here exactly, but as some point I tried reading a scroll of earth to block the doorway—not knowing that scrolls of earth don't work on the Astral Plane.
I don't remember what I did to get out of that jam—maybe a potion of full healing and a wand of death. Anyway, I managed to get through the door to the left and lock it behind me. I had lost nearly half of my maximum HP.
This blasted Medicus ossium was standing directly in the square I needed to get into the sanctuary. He had a shield of reflection and a ton of armor and took me forever to kill.
Alas, this time the altar was chaotic.
Here's an overview of the monsters in the level as revealed by telepathy.
Death entered the sanctuary and forced my hand in retreating back toward the center. Before this, I don't think I knew that the riders could unlock doors.
Then came the second near-death experience. I tried to make a break for it, but too many monsters were summoned and I got trapped in a doorway. The situation was truly dire. Monsters were stacked 2 or 3 tiles deep in both directions. Among the monsters hemming me in were Pestilence and a cockatrice. At some point—it was either here or earlier, when I got down to 5 HP—I accidentally wasted a turn. I was down to 18 HP, with a terminal illness that would kill me in a few turns, and that's even if I was able to survive simple attack damage. (Most of the monsters around me could easily do 18 damage in one turn.) On top of that, I was confused, so I wasn't even guaranteed to hit or move in whatever direction I chose.
Something told me to stop making decisions in my current mental state, so I saved the game and quit.
April 9
I took a whole day off to think about what to do.
I think I am toast in my NetHack game
I'm down to 13 [sic] HP, surrounded by monsters, and also have a terminal illness effect that will instakill me in a few turns (not sure how many).
My max HP, which was close to 300, is only about 130 now, since I suffered a bunch of life-draining attacks. The last level is really really hard
But I developed a plan. There is something I can do to maybe survive 1 or 2 turns, if I'm lucky, I thought. But it was not certain. If it works, I can spend 2 turns to take off my amulet of reflection and put on an amulet of life saving. Then when a monster kills me or the illness kills me, I will respawn will full health and no illness. (I think.) But it was a long shot, and even after that I would need to somehow survive the swarm of monsters I was in.
April 10
Remember I said I was trying to do an informal challenge to avoid wearing a ring of conflict? A ring of conflict was the only thing I could think of that could save me in this moment. I must have had a ring finger free, because I was able to put it on in one turn. Monsters attacked each other. For this turn, none attacked me.
Step 1 complete, didn't die, HP:18(127), Hungry, TermIll
I applied a unicorn horn, perhaps hoping it would cure my terminally ill status, but it only cured my confusion.
I took off the amulet of reflection. Monsters got a chance to attack, but none attacked me.
Step 2 complete, amulet of [REDACTED] removed
HP:18(127), Hungry, TermIll
I put on the amulet of life saving I had in open inventory. Again I was not hit by any monsters.
Step 3 complete, amulet of life saving put on
HP:22(127), Hungry, TermIll
I pulled my stash of three more amulets of life saving out of a bag of holding.
I may have pulled it off? At least solved the immediate crisis. I hope that dying+resurrecting cures my illness. I'm going to get my other amulets of life saving out of my bag so I can put another one on right away after I resurrect.
Ultimate success is still in question, there's a long way and a lot of monsters between me and the altar I need to get to.
On the next turn something finally killed me. I don't remember what—it may have been as simple as melee combat. The amulet saved my life. I was no longer hungry, but still terminally ill, and now also stunned. But my HP was restored, at least.
Finally Pestilence killed me:
Pestilence reaches out, and you feel fever and chills. You feel much worse.--More-- You die... But wait... Your medallion begins to glow! You feel much better! The medallion crumbles to dust! Pestilence touches you! You stagger...--More-- You survived that attempt on your life.
Okay, I died and resurrected, I was cured from my illness but then immediately re-infected. That may be ok; I have 3 more life saving amulets (never thought I'd use them…)
Next step, put on a new amulet, equip my shield of [REDACTED] to make up for the amulet of [REDACTED] I had to remove, then try to kill [REDACTED] who keeps poisoning me, ???, ascend.
I quickly put on another amulet of life saving, as I thought it likely I would be killed again.
I applied a unicorn horn, trying to sure the stun status, but it cured the terminally ill status instead. (I didn't know a unicorn horn could cure that.) Something had hit me in the meanwhile, and I had lost a point of Con.
I continued applying the unicorn horn and cured my stunned status and regained my Con.
I decided to ignore the disenchanter and zap a wand of death at Pestilence, hoping to avoid getting poisoned again. It worked, and for a moment it looked like I had cleared a slight path forward.
An angel stepped in front of the door and stopped me from escaping right away. Since I had swapped my amulet of reflection, I decided to equip a shield of reflection. This necessitated turning off two-weapon combat, which was unfortunate because that had been the source of a lot of my damage output.
I related the situation (partially redacted) to my friend:
Ok, didn't get my shield on yet, but I killed [REDACTED] and was even able to cure my illness without dying using an item that I didn't know could have that effect. (I was actually trying to cure my Stun status in order to accurately target [REDACTED].)
$:0 HP:103(127) Pw:110(110) AC:-34 Xp:19/2762769 T:69528
There is a circumstance that makes me think I just may be able to pull this off. 2 steps away from me is a [REDACTED] corpse, which those who have spoken to the oracle enough times will know is extremely powerful. Just try not to fall in one of the pits I dug earlier while holding it!
At last I escaped from the doorway. Now I took a cue from my first ascension, picked up the nearby cockatrice corpse and started swinging it for all I was worth. Wielding a cockatrice corpse was another strategy I had informally been trying to avoid in this run, but it was too late for pride.
With the cockatrice corpse I fought my way back to the center. I was also still getting mileage out of my starting expensive camera.
Got my shield on, managed to make it the 2 steps, [REDACTED] corpse picked up.
Now it looks like I may have a straight shot for 10 squares or so until the next bottleneck where I'll have to deal with something. I hope the monster density is less, ahead of me.
HP:112(127)I'm glad I remembered about the usefulness of my expensive camera. Many of the monsters in this level are immune to almost everything, but you can still blind them and scare them with the camera, which can sometimes even make them get out of your way.
I got up to the second door and locked it behind me.
Entered the neutral sanctuary at last.
I was nervous about the monsters accumulating outside, so I didn't waste any time. I begged 2 zorkmids off the priest and offered the amulet.
I was convinced I was a goner, 2 night ago when I saved.
I probably would have been, if I hadn't stopped playing right then, and given myself several hours to think about what to do.

Game turns versus real time
I've always been curious about the relation between game turns and real time in a turn-based game like NetHack. Since I had a bunch of timestamped screenshots with turn counts, I made a CSV file and the below graph that shows on which time/date I hit various turn counts.
Late-game turns take more time than early-game turns. I was through 50% of the ultimate turn count at day 6 of the 28 total days of the run.
